Description of Practice:
Mr. Van Vlear serves as Environmental Chair for Voss Cook & Thel LLP, a position he has held since joining the Firm as a partner in 1998. He is a litigator, clean-up strategist, and real estate counselor for all aspects of contaminated sites. Admitted to the California bar in 1987, Mr. Van Vlear was a partner at Brown, Pistone, Hurley & Van Vlear immediately prior to moving that firm’s environmental practice to Voss Cook & Thel. He is also a California Registered Environmental Assessor.
Mr. Van Vlear practices in both state and federal courts, and represents clients before a wide range of environmental agencies. While focused in California, he has experience with sites nation-wide. Mr. Van Vlear’s portfolio of projects includes: airport, commercial, dry-cleaning, gas station, golf course, industrial (broadly defined), landfill, mine, residential, and Superfund. These sites involve a complex array of soils, water, and air contamination.
In addition to writing numerous articles for local, regional, and national publications, in 1996 Mr. Van Vlear authored The Environmental Handbook (ISBN 0-9652553-0-1). He has been interviewed twice on television and has presented over 60 professional speeches, seminars, and classes. Mr. Van Vlear has served as an arbitrator, testifying expert on specialty legal areas, and was co-chair of the Orange County Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section.
Mr. Van Vlear holds a Bachelors in Social Ecology, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of California, Irvine. While earning his Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Pepperdine University School of Law, he was awarded the distinguished Sorenson Memorial Award for Literary Excellence and West Publishing’s Most Significant Contribution to Overall Legal Scholarship for a ground-breaking published piece on land use aesthetics.
