Description of Practice:
Ed is the head of Voss, Cook & Thel LLP's Tax Department. Ed specializes in the tax area and his experience in that area includes corporate, "flow-through entity" and individual tax planning, including choice of entity considerations, acquisitions, dispositions, mergers and other reorganizations, debt restructurings, and tax controversy litigation.
Ed and James G. Damon, Litigation Partner, handled the precedent setting case of Wertin v. Franchise Tax Board (1998) 68 Cal. App. 4th 961, review denied (3/31/99), in which the California Franchise Tax Board (i) was ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to our Firm's client, and (ii) was required to alter the manner in which it makes assessments in the future. The Court in that case also ordered the Franchise Tax Board to pay all of our client's attorneys' fees.
Ed began his career with the Los Angeles office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, one of the largest firms in the country, and has been with Voss, Cook & Thel LLP since 1984.
Ed received his law degree from Harvard University in 1981, and his undergraduate degree (B.S., Business Administration, Concentration in Accounting) in 1978 from Washington University in St. Louis.
